John Davis Lodge (1903-1985), was a republican politician, governor of Connecticut from 1951-55, and U.S. ambassador to Spain, Argentina, and Switzerland. In his speech to the graduates, Governor Lodge said, "A deepening of the spirit, providing men with the capacity to stand for something, is essential in an era sickled over with doubt, hesitancy and indecision."
