Description

The session aims to demonstrate how Disaster Response and Humanitarian Aid in the Philippines have developed in the past few years. More specifically, it will illustrate how Ateneo University has organized the different sectors and stakeholders in its community to more efficiently respond during times of calamity and disaster. The program will consist of a short introduction of the Philippine situation (e.g., its inclusion in the Pacific Ring of Fire and a usual path for typhoons from the Pacific); a brief presentation of the best practices of the Ateneo de Manila University in terms of disaster management; as well as its importance in the formation of its students and the community as a whole.

Facilitators:

Mary Ann P. Manapat is the current Director of the Office for Social Concern and Involvement at the Ateneo de Manila University. With over 150 community partners, this office is the center for student social formation of the Loyola Schools. It has also hosted Philippine immersions for students from Fordham, Canisius, Sta. Clara, University of San Francisco and other Asian Jesuit Universities.

Gabriel Ignacio P. Alejo is the current President of the Ateneo de Manila University Student Council. A Health Sciences Senior, he served as the student head for disaster response. Both Mary Ann and Gabriel are integral members of the Ateneo Disaster Response and Management Team.
