Abstract
Much of what is published about MBSE is focused on new technology and new methodologies. Parts of MBSE have been around for a long time particularly when one widens the view a bit. This paper offers a retrospective, a brief look at where we are today, and then also where we should go down the road for more effective systems. Much of the paper content is framed by the Systems Engineering Vee which is a template for system development. The paper addresses the good, bad, and ugly regarding the Vee and also clarifies what needs to change for realizing the benefits of MBSE. This wider view includes some history by roping in efforts on the Vee which could be described in terms of MBSE. Towards the end of the paper is a description of where MBSE can take us if enabled to do so.
