Description
This brochure provides a detailed overview of the architectural and artistic features of Bellarmine Hall—formerly Hearthstone Hall, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Lashar, and now home to the Office of the President. It includes a glossary of architectural terms and was distributed as a commemorative gift to guests attending the inauguration of Fairfield University’s eighth president, Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., in October 2004.
Notes
This booklet is based on research by Rev. Charles F. Duffy, S.J. (1912–1992), who joined his fellow Jesuit brothers as part of the faculty and administration of Fairfield Prep in 1945, and moved to the University two years later. He served as bookstore supervisor and later as registrar until his retirement in 1977. In retirement, Fr. Duffy devoted countless hours to documenting Fairfield’s early history, including the 20-page, single-spaced manuscript distilled in this booklet. He also authored the first book in the series The Chronicles of Fairfield University, published shortly before his death. This booklet was further researched and edited by Linda Gustavson ’00, who earned a degree in Art History through University College while serving as publications assistant in the Office of Public Relations.
