“Born in Czechoslovakia, Mr. Sommer’s experiences, discussed in his recently published autobiography in riveting detail, includes his escape from a Nazi labor camp just before he was to be sent to Auschwitz and his subsequent involuntary service in the Soviet Army. Arriving in the U.S. with a limited education and virtually no knowledge of English, he went on to become the 1981 “National Teacher of the Year,” an award presented to him at the White House. Jay Sommer currently serves as Professor of Foreign Languages at Long Island University.”
