Abstract

Discusses a multinational biotechnology corporation's (Global-Tech's) creation of a dual-ladder career development (CD) system to meet the needs of employees who felt that there was a lack of career guidance and development in its research and development divisions. Global-Tech's CD program involved 6 stages of development: preparatory discussions, task-force assessment, diagnostic interviews, development of the programs, pilot implementation, and follow-on mechanisms. Based on Global-Tech's program, guidelines are offered for developing other programs, including taking the time to tailor the program to technical professionals' needs and encouraging a focus on the dual ladder
