Notes
The organization of these documents reflects the unique historical relationship between the Society of Jesus, Fairfield Prep, and Fairfield University. At first, income and expenditures for the Fairfield Jesuit community, the Preparatory School, and (once established) the College of Arts and Sciences were reported together. By the early 1950’s, separate monthly balance sheets were being prepared for the Prep, the College, and the “House”. However, overall statements of financial position continue to represent all aspects of the enterprise, reflecting their close integration during this period.
Rev. Henry “Harry” L. Huss, S.J., was Fairfield’s Treasurer from 1948 to 1966. He thereafter served as Vice President of Operations from 1966 to 1968, and special advisor to the President on financial affairs from 1968 until his retirement in 1974. During the Second World War, Fr. Huss served for more than three years as an Army chaplain, rising to the rank of major and receiving the Bronze Star. He died in Bridgeport, Conn., in 1976.
