This collection combines several different sets of documents pertaining to the construction, renovation, decoration, or furnishing of Fairfield’s campus buildings or other physical facilities. Overall, the contents include building specifications; blueprints and other technical drawings; vendor catalogs and brochures; master planning documents; internal planning and committee records; correspondence with architects, engineers, vendors, artists, zoning authorities, religious authorities, and potential donors; donor prospectuses; programs from dedication events; and notes from subsequent research on certain campus buildings. Full or partial buildings specifications are provided for Berchmans Hall, Xavier Hall, Loyola Hall, Canisius Hall, Gonzaga Hall, Regis Hall, the Campus Center, Nyselius Library, and the Bannow Science Center. The collection also includes substantial information about the decorative elements selected for the University’s original chapels, in McAuliffe and Bellarmine Halls; the planning process for Nyselius Library; and the resolution of a zoning controversy that delayed the construction of Jogues Hall.

This collection primarily consists of monthly balance sheets and other financial reports (including overall statements of financial position) for the combined enterprise of the Fairfield College Preparatory School and Fairfield University. These reports cover the period from July 1942 to May 1964 with a gap from July 1953 through June 1959. The collection also includes documents pertaining to initial furnishing costs and wartime food rationing during Fairfield’s earliest years (1942-45).

Rev. William C. McInnes, S.J.
This collection includes records of Fr. McInnes’ activities as President of Fairfield (1964-1973) as well as papers, scrapbooks, and photo albums documenting his personal interests, activities, and travels. Of particular note are the contents of a scrapbook maintained by Fr. McInnes devoted to letters and newspaper articles on the subject of student unrest at Fairfield between 1967 and 1970. The collection also includes biographical material on Fr. McInnes, including oral history transcripts and copies of obituary articles.

The contents of this collection include annual reports; grant applications and awards; lecture series conference agenda; committee notes; course catalogs and syllabi; lecture transcripts; materials related to the hiring of adjunct faculty; materials related to Earth Day events and the Environmental Studies program; letters from Lisa Newton in support of colleagues’ applications for tenure; and papers and articles authored by her. Topics covered include business ethics, stewardship of the earth, surrogate motherhood, and abortion.

Fairfield University Freshman Photo Directories (“Face Books”); alternatively, The Freshman Record; The ‘Field.
Orientation Office, Office of Student Services, and New Student Office
These printed photo directories, or “face books,” formed part of the University’s orientation materials for incoming freshmen. They include photographs, addresses and intended majors of new students, as well as photographs and names of student advisors and administrators. They also often include maps, illustrations, and other helpful hints. This series runs from 1972 (Class of 1976) through 2007 (Class of 2011). Up through 1988 (the Class of 1992 edition), Fairfield’s combined freshman orientation handbook and photo directory was known as “The Freshman Record.” From 1989 (Class of 1993) through 1997 (Class of 2001), each edition was given a unique title of its own (e.g. “The Pursuit of Excellence: Orientation 1989”). From 1998 onward (Class of 2002), the publication was known as “The ‘Field,” with a unique subtitle for each edition (e.g. “Walking on Sunshine/Class of 2002”).

Records of the activities of Fairfield University Rectors and Presidents from 1942 to the present, with the exception of Rev. William C. McInnes, S.J. (1964-1973) and Dr. Lynn Babington (interim President in 2017). Records of Fr. McInnes’ administration are instead included in the Papers of Rev. William McInnes, S.J. The nature and amount of material in this collection varies considerably from administration to administration, but typically includes inauguration materials, congratulation certificates, publicity materials, and/or correspondence (notably including letters by and from Rev. John McEleney, S.J. and Rev. James Dolan, S.J, that relate to Fairfield’s founding and early development). The collection also includes records of the 2016 Presidential Search Committee, whose work resulted in the selection of Rev. Jeffrey von Arx.

This collection represents working files on the topic of separate incorporation for Fairfield University and the Fairfield Jesuit Community, likely assembled between 1968 and 1970. It includes examples of draft or completed foundational documents from other Jesuit colleges and universities; by-laws for the college or university’s Board of Trustees; by-laws for the incorporated Jesuit community at the college or university; and agreements between the college or university and its Jesuit community. The collection also includes notes; correspondence; conference programs and addresses; position papers; statements of principle; articles of incorporation; meeting minutes; compensation agreements; financial and property records; faculty statistics; and photocopied background materials.

Sports Division/Athletics Department
The Records of the Sports Division/Athletics Department consist of various media guides, game programs, prospectuses, and miscellaneous print material from various varsity, intramural, and club sports on campus. Over half the material pertains to men’s and women’s varsity basketball. Coverage of other teams is fairly limited, except for a set of materials on the 50th anniversary of the Fairfield University Rugby Club in 2013.

American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collection
This collection is comprised of various documents which were created and maintained in connection with Fairfield University’s chapter of the AAUP from the early 1960s through the late 1980s. The collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence between members and the national organization, as well as various reports, newspaper articles, conference/event planning information. Among the artifacts of interest are salary discussions as well as a 1969 report on student demonstrations (disruptions).

University Governance Collection (1969-71 Constitutional Convention/Tri-Partite Council)
This collection is comprised of records of different creators, including Professor Edward Dew, Dr. Lisa Perkins, Dr. John Barone (Provost), and others who were involved with the Constitutional Convention that convened from 1969 through May 1971. Professor Edward Dew’s files include his summary of the Convention and its significance reflecting the political and civil issues of the day. Also included in this collection are the files maintained by Dr. Lisa Perkins about the Constitutional Convention, the Tri-Partite Council, and the final Constitution. Included are meeting minutes and drafts, newspaper clippings, correspondence, as well as the final Constitution.

Bridgeport Engineering Institute
The records of the Bridgeport Engineering Institute (BEI) contain papers and records from the school’s beginning in 1924 until 1994 when it merged with Fairfield University and would eventually become its School of Engineering. Comprised primarily of print-based material, there are also numerous identified and unidentified photographs, limited A/V material, and some memorabilia. The print-based materials include administrative files, course catalogs, newsletters, and records of the alumni association.

The collection comprises the winning and honorable mention submissions, awards ceremony programs, posters soliciting submissions, Deans’ invitation to students, and committee lists.

The Fairfield University Glee Club Collection is comprised of concert programs, flyers, brochures, black & white paper-based photographs and negatives of the Club members and directors, and copies of Glee Club recordings in both vinyl and CD. The time covered by the Collection ranges from 1948 through 2015. Concert programs include Glee Club performances from as early 1949 under the direction of Simon G. Harak, who established the choir in 1947, through 2015 under the direction of Carole Ann Maxwell, the present director. Most of the paper-based material is concert programs, ranging from 1949 through 2015. The photographs range from a 1948 negative of the Glee Club’s first radio broadcast to a black & white 1974 photograph of Glee Club members. Noteworthy is a photograph circa 1968 of the Glee Club with Director Harak that includes his son, Rev. G. Simon Harak, S.J., an American peace activist and professor of theology. Among the early Glee Club recordings is “Men in Red,” directed by Simon G. Harak.

The predominance of the material in this collection are black & white photographs and photographic negatives of rehearsals and publicity stills for a small number of productions from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Many of the images are unmarked and undated. There is a representative collection of Playhouse production posters from the early 1960s though the late 1980s, the earliest of which is Macbeth, April 1964, and the latest is The Day They Shot John Lennon, April 1989. There is a select set of program flyers, most of which are for 1980 productions, that includes the program for the first Playhouse production of The Glass Menagerie in April 1963. There are also bookkeeping records for three seasons (1978 –1981).

This collection is comprised of miscellaneous files, event posters, and memorial plaques transferred from the office of FUSA in 2017. While the majority of the paper files are from the period 2000 through 2017, the collection contains documents from the 1960s through the 1990s. Copies of the FUSA constitution, meeting minutes, various FUSA Senate resolutions, and several FUSA News newsletters are included. Most of the event posters are circa 2000s, but the collection also includes a framed, signed Billy Joel concert poster from the late 1970s.

The Records of the School of Business 1963-1996 consist of administrative material from both the Department of Business Administration (alternately called the Department of Accounting and Business) which existed within the College of Arts and Sciences from 1947 to 1977, as well as the School of Business, which was established as a separate entity in 1978. The records are organized by series and chronological order and include annual reports, general administrative correspondence, internal memos, and meeting minutes. The records also contain a copy of the Self-Evaluation Report for Initial Accreditation for the School of Business from May 1996, submitted to the American Assembly of the Collegiate Schools of Business, including appendices. Lastly, there are various miscellaneous reports, including the proposal for a Master of Science in Financial Management from 1979 and a Statement of Operations on the Bureau of Business Research at Fairfield University 1962-1964.

The Records of the Office of the Provost contain the business and personal communications of Dr. John A. Barone, University Provost from 1970 to 1992. The papers cover the period through June, 1981 and are organized chronologically from 1970 through 1981. The strength of the collection lies in the correspondence which gives a written picture of the daily life of the Provost and the issues with which he dealt.

This collection is comprised of primary and secondary sources including monographs, journals, DVDs, calendars, and playing cards. The majority of the monographs were published from 1998 through 2023. The collection contains single sheets and front covers of journals from the 1940s. The primary sources include brochures, pamphlets and postcards from the 1940s-2000s. The collection also includes a Victor Borge 33 ½ record album cover illustrated by Arthur Szyk from1945 and a monograph of Playing Card Art by Arthur Szyk accompanied by a “Players Deck" from 2011.

The Bennett Center for Judaic Studies Poster and Video Collection is composed of posters and video recordings pertaining to the programming put on by the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies (also called the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Bennett Center), including guest lectures, concerts, cultural events, and annual events like Holocaust Remembrance Services, the Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert, and the Jacoby-Lunin Humanitarian Lectureship. It contains material from 1994-2022. The collection includes both the physical versions and digital copies of 180 color posters and 145 event recordings.

Walter J. Petry Collection

Archival records include newspapers, journals, pamphlets, posters, one object (mask) and other print-based material related to the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua (1979-1990). Also included in Prof. Petry’s donation to the University are 400 published books (secondary sources) that have been incorporated into the library’s main circulating collection. Please see the two-volume DVD set recorded in 2008, in which Prof. Petry discusses the Sandinista Revolution and highlights certain aspects of this collection.

John S. Sharnik Collection
John S. Sharnik
This collection, consisting of paper-based materials, 16mm film, and umatic videotape, highlights the development of the television documentary at the Columbia Broadcasting Company (CBS) between 1955 – 1988, where John Sharnik was a television producer and news executive. Scripts, notes, and background information on TV documentaries produced by Mr. Sharnik, as well as original 16mm films and videotaped material, are included in the collection. The original catalogue was compiled and written by the donor himself, and includes notes which can be consulted for more information on the material, its significance and place in the history of documentary-making.
