Description

The Records of the Office of the Provost contain the business and personal communications of Dr. John A. Barone, University Provost from 1970 to 1992. The papers cover the period through June, 1981 and are organized chronologically from 1970 through 1981. The strength of the collection lies in the correspondence which gives a written picture of the daily life of the Provost and the issues with which he dealt.

Notes

In 1970, Dr. John A. Barone was appointed the first Provost of Fairfield University. This appointment made Dr. Barone the highest-ranking lay administrator at any Jesuit university or college. Under his leadership, Fairfield University experienced great growth and transformation from a small regional school to a nationally ranked university. Dr. Barone joined the Fairfield University faculty as a chemistry instructor in 1950 after finishing his doctoral studies at Perdue University, and rose quickly through the ranks to be named a full professor in 1962. In 1966 he was named Vice President of Planning, making him the first layperson to be named in such a role at Fairfield University. Dr. Barone retired from the Office of the Provost in June 1992 with emeritus status and received an honorary doctorate from Fairfield University. Dr. Barone passed away in June 2007.
