Description
This collection includes records of the meetings of the General Faculty of Fairfield University (meeting minutes, agendas, and materials discussed); records of the meetings of the Academic Council (meeting minutes, agendas, and materials discussed); correspondence maintained by the Secretary of the General Faculty; multiple editions of the Faculty Handbook, the Journal of Record, and the Directory of the General Faculty, with associated documentation; and copies of formal proposals for changes or additions to Fairfield’s academic program. Also included are documents pertaining to the efforts to develop a faculty grievance procedure in the 1980’s and 1990’s; documents pertaining to the discussion of merit pay in the early 2000’s; and multiple editions of the Instructional Handbook. Coverage is strongest through 2012, except that annual editions of the Directory of the General Faculty are also available for the period 2012-2019.

Notes
The General Faculty of Fairfield University is composed of all full-time University faculty members with the rank of Instructor or above, the President of the University, the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Academic Deans, and the University Librarian. The Academic Council, the executive arm of the General Faculty, consists of qualified faculty members elected by their colleagues.
Irene Mulvey, Ph.D., is professor emerita of mathematics at Fairfield University. She received her doctorate from Wesleyan University in 1983, and she has been a member of the Fairfield faculty since 1985. A longtime faculty activist, she served as Secretary of the General Faculty from 2003 to 2012. From June of 2020 to June of 2024, she served as President of the American Association of University Professors.
